So, from the previous blog posts we know our curl pattern as well as our hair density. Let's move on to the next stage of understanding our hair.
The hair porosity test (glass of water edition)
Steps to Perform the Hair Porosity Test:
- Wash your hair: Make sure your hair is clean and free from any products, oils, or buildup that might interfere with the test.
- Prepare a glass of water: Fill a clear glass with room-temperature water.
- Take a strand of hair: After washing and drying, gently pluck a strand of hair from your comb or brush.
-
Drop the hair into the water: Place the hair strand in the water and observe how it behaves.
- Low porosity: The hair will float on top of the water for a long time, indicating the cuticles are tightly packed and not allowing much water in.
- Medium (normal) porosity: The hair will float for a bit and then sink slowly, showing a balanced absorption and retention of moisture.
- High porosity: The hair will sink quickly, indicating that the cuticles are open and absorb moisture easily, but it may also lose moisture quickly
Doing the test on the same day as wash day is best. Once you've determined what your porosity and curl type is, you can start looking into the most ideal ingredients and routine for your hair.
